Welcome to Cardamom Pod news – Fresh from our Blog!
We will be sharing with you the different qualities of herbs and spices, how to create flavours, what’s hot internationally and on our own shores, as well as exploring the philosophy and results of different diets and fads going around.
Our first spice of the week is Turmeric which is extremely healthy, beneficial and gives a golden glow to foods like curries and Dhals (indian soup). It’s been used medicinally in many cultures for a variety of ailments like tummy problems, cancers and many other agitations. It’s also anti- inflammatory, a powerful antioxidant, and has become widely available in supermarkets farmers markets fruit and veg stores etc.
Turmeric is also used in Ayurveda, the ancient Indian science of health and in many detox drinks and tonics such as Kambucha, Chai etc… This special spice will also be featured in our first recipe of the week next week so look out for that. We will keep it fairly simple for home cooking, but the dish can also be sampled at our restaurant in Broadbeach either as a leisurely meal or quick take-out if time is of the essence.
Also look out for us every Monday when we’ll also be featuring a different, far out Mocktail created by our amazing drink and food service specialist Debora Franco. We’ll call that ‘Mocktail Monday”!
One big global food trend at the moment is donuts – not the generic commercial variety, rather the hand-crafted innovative artful variety. We had the great and extended pleasure of sampling in New York at the donut plant in Chelsea. Let me say, they were delicious!
We were fortunate to meet the owner who was brimming with creative enthusiasm. We were chasing our favourites down through his various outlets on an almost daily basis like crazed individuals. I guess everyone can relate because as much as we all try to eat healthy foods, often the desire to inhale a box of fragrant cinnamon sugar-coated donuts is overpowering, and gives a green smoothie a good run for its money in the feel-great stakes!
Look out for this re-incarnated new age of donuts to hit the Coast soon in more baked, raw, and boutique form than is widely available.
